『District Six』 is the name of a former residential area in Cape Town, South Africa. It is known as the place where the South African government forcibly expelled more than 60,000 residents. The Apartheid Regime was implemented from 1948 to 1994, a segregation policy that distinguishes white from non-whites, and separates residences, marriage, and access areas by race.
 
The sci-fi film "District 9" was produced by director Neill Blomkamp in 2009 based on the true story of South Africa. The film features aliens, transcendental strangers who trapped under human control for 28years. The film satirises the cruelty and absurdity of humans treating aliens. This indicates that while human migration today is expanding and migrants are increasing rapidly,but racism, hatred, and class barriers still exist. It is questionable why each country's social mix policies exist in response.
 
The title of the work < District 37°36'46.9"N 126°58'38.3"E > is the GPS of the Kim Jongyoung Museum of Art. The barbed wire fencing unveiled in this exhibition depicts hatred and discrimination as a device and symbol. The artist talked about social issues through architectural objects in her previous work describing the number and size of windows as barriers to distinguishing residents living on a lease basis from those who own a house. This < District 37°36'46.9"N 126°58'38.3"E > is also about ‘social distinction’ in many parts of our society.

Visitors may wonder why the barbed wire fence was displayed here in the museum. The artist wants the audience to recognise the intention that the fence was used as a device to divide the community and protect certain groups. Also, looking at this reality from an alien's perspective, the way they predict their extinction may resemble the current human beings’ situation in our lives. This is in line with what the director Blomkamp tried to say in his film with the eyes of aliens.

The artist wants to awaken visitors to a sense that they have not felt in their daily lives through the surprise of the display of barbed wire fences in the museum. This not only reflects the emotions facing each other in front of the fence on their lives but also reminds them of the issue of "discrimination" that they have not unconsciously noticed and visually reveals the dangers of our reality.

『디스트릭트 6』는 남아프리카 공화국의 케이프타운 내에 있던 주거 구역의 명칭이다. 이곳은 남아공 정부가 6만 명이 넘는 거주민들을 강제 이주시킨 곳으로 잘 알려져 있다. 1948년부터 1994년까지 시행한 남아공의 ‘아파르트헤이트(Apartheid)정책’은 백인 정권이 법률로 공식화한 ‘인종분리정책’이다. 국민을 백인, 흑인, 유색인, 인도인으로 분류하여 인종별로 거주지, 통혼, 출입 구역을 분리한 대표적인 인종차별법이다.

2009년, 이러한 남아공의 현실을 모티브로 한 SF 『디스트릭트 9』가 상영되었다. 블룸캠프가 영화의 감독과 각본을 맡았다. 디스트릭트 9에는 28년 동안 임시 수용된 채 인간의 통제를 받는 초월적인 타자로 외계인이 등장한다. 이 영화는 그들을 대하는 인간의 태도를 통해 인간의 잔인함과 부조리함을 풍자했다. 오늘날 인류의 이동은 확대되고 이주자들은 급증하고 있지만, 이에 대응하는 각 나라의 소셜믹스 정책을 비웃기라도 하듯이 인종차별, 혐오, 계층 간의 장벽은 더 높아만 지고 있다.

작품 제목 < 디스트릭트(District) 37°36'46.9"N 126°58'38.3"E >는 상징적인 장소로서 김종영 미술관의 ‘위성 좌표(GPS)’다. 이 공간을 가로지르는 철책은 혐오와 차별을 구획짓는 장치이자 상징이다. 작가는 이전 작업에서 임대아파트 거주민과 분양아파트 거주민을 구별하기 위한 장벽, 창문의 개수와 크기로 측정되는 삶의 잣대 등의 사회적 문제를 건축적 사물을 통해서 이야기했다. 이번 작업 역시 우리 사회 여러 공간에서 이루어지는 ‘사회적 구별짓기’에 대해 말하고자 한다.

전시공간에 위치한 철책은 사뭇 당혹스럽게 보일 수 있다. 무엇을 위한 구획인가? 우리가 일상에서 쉽게 마주하고 있는 이 울타리는 공동체를 분할하고 어떤 특정 집단을 보호하는 장치로 작동한다. 이런 장치 안에서 마주하는 현실을 외계인의 시선에서 보자면, 자신들의 멸종을 마주하고 있는 ‘우리 속의 인간’들처럼 보일 것이다. 불룸캠프 감독이 『디스트릭트 9』에서 외계종족의 시선을 빌어 말하고자 했던 것과 궤를 같이 한다.

작가는 미술관 안의 철책이 주는 당혹스러움과 충격을 통해 일상에서 느끼지 못했던 감각을 일깨우고자 한다. 철책 앞에서 마주하는 감정을 투영해 우리의 현실을 되돌아보게 된다. 철책은 무감각하게 당연시 받아들이고 있는 차별을 상기시켜 우리 현실의 위태로움을 시각적으로 드러낸다.
